The Pelham Minor Hockey Association as it is known today, had its' beginning on November 1, 1967 when then recreation director, Mr. Sam Derreck called a meeting at Davis Hall for citizens interested in starting a minor hockey program in the old village of Fonthill. One month later, in December 1967 Don Johnston the first president officially opened the inaugural game at the Fonthill Centennial Rink - an outdoor facility.
In the first year of operation, 166 boys joined the organization and since then registration
now tops 400 players annually - both male and female. In 1968, registration
fees were $4.00 per year and $0.25 per game. In September, 1970 registration
fees were increased to $10.00 per year and the $0.25 per game fee was
eliminated. During these early years, many volunteers gave endless hours
of time towards Minor Hockey in Pelham including: Vic Christopher, Don
Johnston, Bill Gibbard, Lloyd Banford and Mike Kereluk. The green and
gold colours of the association began to appear as the regional government
took the former villages of Fonthill, Fenwick and Ridgeville and formed
the present Town of Pelham. With that, minor hockey in the new town
was now under the leadership of the Pelham Minor Hockey Association.
During the early 70's, registration fees continued to increase, girls began to play in the minor hockey system, and talk about a new covered arena began. Vern Harvey, Ted Hollingshead, Ron Secord, Bill Gee and Bob Williams were some of the key volunteers of the minor hockey system in Pelham. Money was being raised through various functions to fund a new covered arena. The first game was played in the new Pelham Arena on Jan. 18, 1976.
Today, Pelham Minor Hockey continues to prosper. Each year, Pelham is proud to host a Regional Silver Stick Tournament in December and the North American A/E Silver Stick Finals Tournament in January amongst house league tournaments for each age group, from Novice all the way up to Midget.
